DCH Construction was founded by Duncan Cameron in 1946. Based in Essex, we deliver new-build and refurbishment projects for a variety of clients throughout the east of England.

We build using a range of methods from traditional masonry to our own innovative ‘straw bale’ design. Several of our current projects are being built to Passivhaus standards, which offer high levels of occupant comfort while using very little energy.

Typical DCH contracts range in value from £200,000 to £6 million. DCH have 32 directly employed Site and Office based staff, as well as agreeing contracts with sub-contractors on a regular basis.

Main description

Your time as an apprentice will be split between working on-site with an experienced tradesperson/colleague learning from their expertise, and college-based study, working towards completion of the Level 2 Apprenticeship. The role will give the skills and abilities to not only be part of a team but to play an active role within a busy team.

DCH are looking for an individual who is passionate about carpentry and other aspects of the building industry to join the DCH team as an apprentice carpenter.

You will assist the site carpenter with first/second fix, ranging from:

  • Roof truss installation
  • Floor joists installation & chipboard flooring to first floors
  • Pipework boxing in
  • Window fitting & window boards
  • Staircase fitting
  • Skirting & architrave
  • Bath panels
  • Staircase balustrades and handrails
  • Cupboard shelving
  • Kitchen fitting

You will also be required to maintain a clear and tidy workspace, and dispose of waste materials correctly.

All apprentices will be inducted on site by the Site Manager and will be required to undertake instruction and guidance and learn the principles of Health, Safety and Welfare and how these are applied in the workplace.

Apprenticeship standard
Carpentry and joinery Level 2 (GCSE)

The Apprentice will be working towards the Level 2 Carpentry & Joinery (Site Carpentry) Apprenticeship Standard qualification for a duration of 24 months.
College attendance will be at the Colchester Institute - Colchester Campus one day per week during term time. 

Things to consider

You will need to arrange your own travel to and from site. This role will involve working outdoors throughout the year.

Future Prospects

DCH have previously supported and mentored several apprentices and have awarded permanent contracts of employment after successful completion of their apprenticeships.
We do continually support and offer further training to all staff to enable them to progress their career within the industry.
