About us
Shadwell is the world-renowned racing and breeding operation located in Britain, Ireland and the USA, responsible for raising and racing some of the greatest horses of the modern era.
Since 1980 the famous blue and white silks of the late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum have been carried to victory by a succession of champions, from Nashwan to Baaeed. Under the guidance of his daughter, Sheikha Hissa, Sheikh Hamdan’s legacy endures and the racing colours live on under the Shadwell banner.
Nurturing a Legacy
From its inception, Shadwell has become a byword for quality and success in the breeding and racing of thoroughbreds, delivering a succession of champions.
At the same time as the famous colours were becoming an increasingly constant presence in major international races, a number of leading stud farms were acquired and developed with the simple aim of breeding and rearing the finest thoroughbreds in the world.
This started with the purchase of Derrinstown Stud in Ireland followed by Shadwell Estate in the UK and Shadwell Farm in the USA. These farms remain the backbone of the operation’s global success.
In the UK
The Shadwell Estate in Norfolk was acquired in 1984 and the adjacent Nunnery Stud in 1986. Nearby in Newmarket, Beech House Stud, home to the UK based Shadwell stallions, was purchased in 1990.
Home to some of the world's greatest racehorses
Shadwell has stood some of the world’s greatest racehorses and most influential stallions of the modern era. Starting with breed shaping stallion Green Desert, through to world champion Baaeed, himself a great grandson of Green Desert and direct descendent of Shadwell’s foundation mare, Height Of Fashion, dam of champions Nashwan, Unfuwain and Nayef.
The Shadwell stallions currently stand at Beech House Stud, Newmarket and at Derrinstown Stud, Co. Kildare.
