Early Careers
Graduate Development Scheme
From Forecasting to Technology, Science to Engineering, Marketing to Corporate Services and more. If you are considering your next steps after university, the Met Office Graduate Development Scheme provides a vast range of incredible opportunities to launch exciting, world-changing careers. This scheme will provide a fantastic introduction to the Met Office and Civil Service. You'll then have the freedom of choice when it comes to the area that you’re interested in. Offering personal development opportunities and real-work placements, you'll follow a bespoke programme with a support system that will help bring the very best out of you.

Industrial Placements
The world is changing rapidly, and we invite talented people from all backgrounds to bring fresh perspectives and gain valuable experience in the evolving world of work at the Met Office. Our Industrial Placement scheme is a 12-month programme offering the opportunity to work on real projects with global impact. Gaining hands-on experience, placements will work in a team with experts in their field. With placement opportunities in everything from the Flood Forecasting Centre, Science, Technology, Communications and our Property departments.! Work Experience
The Met Office work experience programme consists of two distinct phases. The first is an online work experience. This stand-alone programme is available to all UK-based students aged between 13 and 18, and all who register are guaranteed a place. As part of this programme, you’ll explore typical roles in the Met Office through a series of videos, projects and webinars and learn all about the common skills and qualifications needed to pursue a range of careers, from Forecasting, Engineering and Data Science to Cyber Security, and Customer & Stakeholder Management. Following completion of the online programme, you can apply for a second phase of work experience - a two to three day in-person placement, for which limited places are available. Apprenticeships
The world is continuously changing. This means that we’re always on the lookout for talented people from a diverse range of backgrounds to help us see things through fresh eyes and drive forward innovation at the Met Office.
Our apprentices play a vital role in helping us deliver world-changing work. We currently have apprentices in various roles across the organisation including Technology, Human Resources, Engineering, Legal Services, Project Management and Finance. These range from Level 2 to Level 6 programmes. From school and college leavers to people returning to work or looking to retrain. Foundation Operational Meteorologist
From our observations to the science and technology that helps simulate and predict the weather forecast, our Operational Meteorology teams help individuals, industry and governments around the world prepare for tomorrow and beyond. Foundation Operational Meteorology is our industry-leading learning pathway for aspiring Operational Meteorologists. The pathway is a blend of trainer-led learning and assessments, combined with practical experience providing real-time services for real customers. And once you’re qualified you’ll be at the heart of the Met Office’s operations, using our state-of-the-art technology and weather information to support our partners across a range of fascinating sectors.
