The primary responsibility of a site manager is to organise and oversee work on building sites, ensuring that the work is completed safely, on time, and within budget. They work in close collaboration with architects, surveyors, and builders to ensure that the project is on track and that there are sufficient staff, materials, and machinery to complete the job.
In today's world, where sustainability is an increasingly pressing issue, site managers must be mindful of the carbon emissions of the project and consider the materials being used, ways to reduce waste, assess the amount of energy used in transporting materials, and explore sustainable suppliers.
There are several routes to becoming a site manager, you could do a foundation degree, degree, or higher national diploma in a relevant subject such as building studies.
You could take an apprenticeship with a construction company and work your way up. If you’re an experienced estimator, building technician, surveyor, or site supervisor, you may be able to apply directly for a site manager role.
Salary range £25k to £50k
