The Project Manager will have the overall responsibility for the project from start to finish, they will be able to perform effectively within tight deadlines while operating within a strict budget. They will develop a programme of work and the strategy to make the project happen, they will need to plan ahead to make sure provision is made for delivery and storage of materials and equipment and will also monitor health and safety to make sure regulations are adhered to.
Entry Requirements
There are various routes to becoming a construction project manager, you could take a university or college course or an apprenticeship.
University
You could do a degree, foundation degree or HND course in one of the following:
- Construction management
- Project management
- Civil Engineering
- Construction and the built environment
You will usually need:
- 1 or 2 A levels for a foundation degree or HND
- 2 or 3 A levels for a degree
College
You could take a relevant course such as:
- Construction and the Built Environment
- Construction Management
You will usually need:
- 4 or 5 GCSEs grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) or equivalent for a level 3 course
- A levels or equivalent for a level 4 or 5 course
The following colleges have construction courses:
- City College Norwich
- College of West Anglia
- East Coast College
- West Suffolk College
- Suffolk New College
Or you local sixth form may offer a relevant course
Apprenticeship
An apprenticeship would be a good way to get some experience and get into the industry.
You could take an intermediate or advanced apprenticeship to get started and then work your way up to management.
You will usually need:
- 2 or 3 GCSEs, or equivalent, at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) for an intermediate apprenticeship (level 2)
- 4 GCSEs or equivalent, at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) including English and maths for an advanced apprenticeship (level3)
Career Path and Progression
With experience you could progress to contract management or project consultancy.
You could specialise in a certain area such as IT or digital, engineering, contracts, health and safety, building inspection or estimating.
You could set up your own business and work as a freelance consultant

Salary Range
£25,000 to £60,000
