Job Description
Motor Mechanics will repair and service customer's vehicles to ensure they are maintained and road worthy. They will diagnose faults using hand tools or a computer and advise customers on what repairs are needed, they will carry out scheduled servicing and maintenance, road test vehicles, update service records and provide the customer with a estimate of time and cost for the job.
Entry Requirements
To become a motor mechanic you could take a college course or you could get into the role through an apprenticeship
College
Once you have completed your college course you could apply to a garage to become a trainee.
Relevant courses include:
- Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
- Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Technology
Entry requirements
You'll usually need:
2 or more GCSEs at grades 9 to 3 (A* to D), or equivalent, for a level 2 course
4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, for a level 3 course

Apprenticeship
You could take an intermediate or advanced apprenticeship in any of the following:
- Light Vehicle Automotive Mechanic
- Mechanical Maintenance Technician
- Motor Vehicle Mechanic
The apprenticeship will usually take 2 to 3 years to complete and you will do on the job training as well as spending time at college or with a training provider.
You'll usually need:
- 2 or 3 GCSEs including English and maths, or equivalent, for an intermediate apprenticeship
- 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths, for an advanced apprenticeship
