A livestock manager will manage livestock through successful breeding. They will ensure animal health and welfare is maintained and make sure that employees follow farm rules relating to animal welfare.
They will also need to consider sustainable farming systems. Livestock that primarily live on pasture are an essential part of sustainable farming. They provide nutrient dense meat and milk, as well as sustainable fibres such as wool, from the grass and legume plants that would be inedible to humans.
Previous hands-on experience and knowledge are as important as academic qualifications, and some employers may appoint you on the basis of your experience alone. However, a degree, foundation degree or higher national diploma in agriculture, agriculture science or a closely related subject would be beneficial.
Salary range £24k - £44k
