Job Description
Jewellery Designers will plan and design jewellery using a variety of materials such as silver, gold, precious stones and crystals. Many jewellery designers are self employed and work on a freelance basis but it is possible to get started by working for a small or medium sized enterprise that supply goods to high street stores or retail chains.
Entry Requirements
There are no set requirements. Skills and experience can be more important than qualifications, although many new jewellery designers have a foundation degree, HND or degree.
University
Relevant foundation degree, HND and degree subjects include:
- Jewellery Design
- Textile Design
- Fashion Design
- Graphic Design
- Jewellery & Silversmithing
- Jewellery & Metal Design
Drawing and computer design skills can also help.
You will usually need:
- 1 or 2 A levels or equivalent for an HND or Foundation Degree
- 3 A levels or equivalent including art & design or a related subject
Career Tips
Many jewellery designers work on a freelance basis, however younger people are coming into the profession after completing their studies and are more likely to work for an organisation on a salaried basis.
You would need to build up a design portfolio to show your work.
Attending craft fairs, exhibitions and entering contests would be beneficial.
Joining the National Association of Jewellers will help with establishing contacts and strong relationships with the industry.

Career Path and Progression
You could become self-employed and sell your designs to manufacturers. Or, you could make up the designs and sell them yourself through galleries, in shops and online.
