Hairdressers will advise clients on suitable cuts, styles, colours and treatments. They will recommend suitable hair products and help clients stay up to date with the latest trends, hairstyles, and products.
Hair salons use large amounts of water, generate waste, and frequently use potentially harmful chemicals to colour and dye hair but many hairdressers are adopting eco-friendly practices such as using sustainable products, recycling, reducing plastic usage, conserving energy, saving water and transitioning to paperless bookings. There has been a notable change in customer preferences as health and environmental concerns become more widely discussed.
You can get into hairdressing through a college course, an apprenticeship or by starting as a trainee and learning on the job. You will need to start in an eco-friendly salon to ensure you are practicing sustainable methods of hairdressing.
Salary range £19,500 (starter) to £30,000 (experienced)
