Groundworkers are usually the first tradespeople that arrive at a construction site. Their main responsibility is to prepare the sub-surfaces for the structural work that follows by carrying out de-vegetation, installing drainage systems, laying concrete and interpreting design specifications. They are also often involved in the final tasks such as laying driveways and footpaths.

In the ever-evolving landscape of civil construction and earthworks, sustainability has become a priority. Consideration must be given to recycling water, using locally and responsibly sourced materials and minimising waste.

There are no formal qualifications required to become a groundworker. You can take a college course, an apprenticeship or apply directly to an employer. However, you will most likely need a Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) to work on a construction site.

Salary range £17k to £30k
