Architects plan, design and oversee construction, extension and restoration projects.
The role is typically associated with the production of accurate, scale drawings and computer aided designs, but has many wider responsibilities, such as suggesting building materials, working closely with builders and engineers to interpret plans, and helping to resolve issues during construction.
Modern architecture is increasingly focused on maximising the use of sustainable materials for construction and the integration of energy-efficient spaces and systems within buildings. This means knowledge of subjects like new heating systems and insulation methods have become almost as important as technical design skills, for those looking for a career in architecture.
There are two routes to an architecture career. You can study for a degree in architecture at university, which takes seven years (including two years of practical work experience). Alternatively, architectural apprenticeships offer a vocational route into the profession
The expected salary for an Architect is £40k - £60k
