An App Developer makes software. Strictly the ‘App’ in the title positions this role as a creator of apps for tablets and phones, though there may be overlap with the broader ‘software developer’, who codes for computers and laptops, and potentially for embedded systems on bespoke hardware, like on a printer for example. App development can be linked to sustainability - or not - to a great degree by the type of apps you are producing. Educational and entertainment apps can help to inform people about green issues, for example.
To become an App Developer you need long term interests in mobile technologies, software (including operating systems) or games. Practice and experience of using some of the common app languages is vital (e.g. Java, C~, Objective-C, C++. Swift, Kotlin), and you could consider a university route, though self-learning is viable through many free or low-cost programming learning resources available online.
Salary range: £30,000-£50,000
