If you're in Year 13 at the moment, this will be your first opportunity to vote in a general election - so make sure you're registered! Registering only takes around five minutes if you do it online. It’s the same whether you plan to vote in person at a polling station, by post, or through a proxy voter.
Voting gives you a voice. It gives you the power to influence how the country is run and a means of speaking out about how you feel the country is being governed, as well as the means to support a party that represents your views. An election provides the biggest opportunity you will get to have your say.
The deadline to register to vote is 23:59 on Tuesday the 18th of June and the General Election is on the 4th of July.
To register > Fill out the form on the gov.uk website - you'll need your National Insurance number or another form of ID, plus your current address details. You can also register by sending a form to your local electoral office.
To vote at the UK general election on the 4th of July, you must be registered to vote and:
- be 18 years of age or over on polling day (You can still register to vote if you are not yet 18, providing you are over 16 and will be 18 or over on polling day)
- be a British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizen
- be resident at an address in the UK (or a UK citizen living abroad who has previously been registered to vote in the UK or has lived in the UK)
- not be legally excluded from voting
- Voters in England need to show photo ID to vote at polling stations
If you don't have an accepted photo ID, you can apply for a free voter ID document, which is known as a Voter Authority Certificate. The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate to vote in the Parliamentary general election is 5pm on Wednesday the 26th of June.
Students - you can be registered at both your home and term-time addresses, but you can only vote in one place. (Voting more than once in a general election is a criminal offence!)
Post and Proxy
If you can’t get to a polling station on the 4th of July, you can register for a proxy vote or a postal vote. But you need to register to vote first.
- If you want to vote by post, you must submit an application online or by post before 17:00 on Wednesday 19th of June.
- If you’d like to vote by proxy, you have to be registered for a proxy vote before 17:00 on Tuesday 26th June - and the person who is voting for you must also be registered to vote as well.
