A Jackson team joined members of Connect Plus Services’ Sustainability Forum to clear a stretch of river of invasive, non-native plants.
They met at the offices of the Canal & River Trust at Enfield Lock before taking to the water to remove floating pennywort from the Lee Navigation.
Volunteers in canoes removed the clumps from the river before colleagues on the bank lifted the vegetation into tubs and took it away. A tonne of foliage was disposed of.
Floating pennywort forms dense mats of rounded leaves which float across the water’s surface, depleting oxygen levels and light for photosynthesis, threatening fish and invertebrates, and outcompeting native water plants.
The day was organised by British Canoeing and the Angling Trust who are working in partnership with the Canals & Rivers Trust and Environment Agency to remove this species with the help of volunteers.
