Highfield Ely Academy is one of Cambridgeshire’s Area Special Schools, based near the centre of Ely. Pupils benefit from having excellent access to local facilities including The Hive Leisure Centre and Ely Cathedral. We typically have 120-130 pupils on roll from Early Years to Year 14. The school is in spacious accommodation that includes specialist teaching rooms: Hall/gymnasium, food technology, science/technology, art, music, ICT, multi-sensory, soft play and sound/light rooms. Visiting therapists have their own suite including offices and therapy rooms. We have three minibuses, which enable pupils to access educational visits to numerous places from the swimming pool and riding stables to work related learning placements, courses at local FE colleges and even the seaside on a sunny day. Main description
We have an amazing opportunity for a self-motivated individual to train to be a Caretaker at our wonderful academy, learning the role from experienced colleagues, whilst completing a Level 3 Facilities Management Supervisor apprenticeship. Previous experience is not required as this is a trainee role.
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
Site Maintenance
- Undertake general site maintenance and basic equipment repair
- Perform temporary and minor repairs/maintenance
- Maintain grounds as necessary e.g. light work such as mow, trim and weed
- Undertake basic DIY and courier dut
- Report major faults/repairs/maintenance to the line manager
- Operate systems such as heating, cooling
Resources
- Monitor stock levels and inform manager of requirements
- Restocking facilities e.g. soap, paper towels
- Store all equipment and chemicals used in the appropriate manner
- Act as designated key holder for academy premises
- Deal with minor security/safety issues
Health & Safety
- Support with implementation of health & safety procedures
- Carry out daily site checks
Sustainability
- Support the delivery of sustainable approaches to working
- Support the Trust with monitoring consumption data, including recording meter readings where appropriate
- Cleaning and Preparation
- Undertake cleaning duties when required which could include dusting, emptying bins, picking up litter, sweeping, washing, vacuuming, scrubbing, buffing, polishing, toilet cleaning in areas of the academy
- Ensure that the any issues with cleaning are reported to the School Business Manager
- Oversee and undertake preparation of rooms and appropriate work areas
Entry requirements
GCSE's in English (grade 4) and Maths (grade 4)

Things to consider
Although this role works all year round, annual leave will usually be taken during school holiday periods.
Future prospects
The apprenticeship could lead to a permanent role as a Caretaker. The role will provide a good grounding in facilities management, which would be an excellent start to any career in this field. Although the experience will be in education, the skills are transferrable to any sector. Future career opportunities could include facilities management at a larger school and estates management across different schools in the Trust.
