About Green Futures in Construction

Construction is a massive industry in our region and has a huge responsibility to aid sustainability. Sustainable construction means building with renewable and recyclable materials as well as reducing waste and energy consumption where possible. According to the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), in order to achieve our goal of net zero, it is estimated that we will need to create 350,000 new job positions.

Around 40% of UK carbon emissions in 2022 were linked to the built environment. Green skills including green-retrofitting, waste management, energy modelling & analysis and a knowledge of low-carbon / environmentally friendly materials are becoming increasingly important and desirable for those considering careers in construction. Employment

The Construction Industry offers careers for everybody, regardless of the qualifications you’ve got. Some entry-level jobs don’t need any qualifications at all. For others, you can explore the relevant college courses, degrees or apprenticeships you need in order to start your career.

Heat Pumps run on electricity and are a low-carbon home heating alternative to gas-fired boilers. The UK only has around 4,000 trained heat-pump installers but will need 33,000 by 2028.

Local Construction projects

The Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk represents one of the largest construction projects ever undertaken in the East Anglia region.  The building phase will take roughly a decade and employ as many as 1500 apprentices.

The East Anglia Hub is an offshore wind complex which will see the development of three projects capable of delivering enough power to supply clean energy to 2.7 million British homes. Construction started in 2022 and is scheduled to be complete in 2026.
