The Barnes Group Limited is a successful family business based in Ipswich.  We are recruiting for a full-time Trainee Accountant to join our Finance Department in the business support division. 

The following job description sets out the main duties and tasks associated with the position; other duties of a similar level and nature undertaken within the business are not excluded simply because they may not be individually mentioned.

Position: Trainee Accountant

Location: Ipswich Head Office

Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: Within the range of £18,000 – £24,000 depending on age and experience

Reporting to: Financial Controller, Divisional Director – Finance

Immediate Colleagues: All staff in the Finance Department

Interfaces with other Departments: All staff in the Company

Hours of work: 39 hours per week (Monday – Friday)

General Description of Role

Training in all aspects of the tasks within the Finance Department, putting that learning in to practice by assisting the team.

Duties and Responsibilities

Tasks:

  • Raising sales ledger invoices
  • Inputting invoices on the purchase ledger
  • Paying invoices through the purchase ledger/bank
  • Holiday relief for the sub-contract ledger payments
  • Opening and maintaining sales and purchase ledger accounts
  • Paying staff expenses
  • Credit Applications
  • As experience increases additional duties such as preparing management accounts and payroll will be taken on by the postholder
  • Carrying out any other duties as requested by the Financial Controller and Divisional Director – Finance

Skills required

You will have the ability to undertake and pass a chartered qualification in accountancy with a professionally recognised body.

  • You are required to be fully computer literate, and familiar with programmes such as Excel and Outlook.
  • You must be honest and trustworthy in all your dealings.
  • In time you should be able to use your initiative, be able to multi-task and deal with changing priorities to meet necessary deadlines.
  • You will need to have good common sense and a flexible approach to working as part of a team.
  • You will pay attention to detail and produce accurate work.
  • You will have the ability to observe complete confidentiality in all areas of work.
  • You will be a good communicator and maintain a polite and helpful attitude and the ability to get on with staff at all levels.

Knowledge and experience of working in a Finance Department is not essential and we welcome applicants with transferrable experience/skills. 

Good GCSE passes (grade 4 or above), have or expect to obtain A level passes or equivalent and keen to work towards AAT is desirable.

The duties of the position will vary from time to time as a result of, new initiatives, new or amended employment legislation, changes in technology, policy changes or re-structuring, in these cases appropriate training may be given to enable the post holder to undertake any new/varied work.

The post holder may also be requested to attend training courses and/or briefing sessions that may fall outside of the normal working week.
