Jackson colleagues helped a group of girl guides and brownies gain their Civil Engineering badge.

Over two evening sessions, Public Liaison Officer Shannon Acton-Brown and Industrial Placement Abbie Scott facilitated a series of STEM challenges with the 4th Goring Guides and Brownies, based in South Oxfordshire.

The activities were aimed at showing the diversity of roles in civil engineering, such as structural engineering, designer engineering and construction engineering.

Abbie, who is a helper at the group, adapted the workbooks to introduce the girls to Jackson and inform them of the work the company is carrying out nearby at Lyminster, where Jackson is building a bypass and viaduct on behalf of West Sussex County Council.

And there was even time for some food fun with the girls building models of bridges using chocolate fingers, melted chocolate, and breadsticks.

“It got very messy,” said Shannon.

The girl guides Civil Engineering badge was developed last year in conjunction with the Institution of Civil Engineering (ICE). It is hoped that it will help Girlguiding members to discover more about the profession and the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in this field. The initiative comes as a response to the ongoing gender disparity in STEM fields, particularly within engineering.
