Main description

At Suffolk County Council, every role is a chance to create positive change. As the Children in Employment and Entertainment Officer in the School Attendance Team, you’ll see the direct impact of your work on the people and places that make Suffolk special. Your role and responsibilities  

  • You will be responsible for the issuing of work permits for school-aged children (under minimum school leaving age). Ensure they comply with legal restrictions on working hours, types of work, and conditions 
  • You will monitor workplaces and investigate complaints or breaches
  • You will approve Body of Persons Approvals (BOPAs) for group performances
  • You will utilise your skills performing theatre inspections, as appropriate, to uphold legal standards and safeguard the welfare of children involved in performances.  Please note these inspections may be required to be undertaken outside of standard business hours approve chaperone licenses for those who supervise children during performances
  • Responsible for the maintaining of a register of all licensed chaperones
  • Enforce legislation such as the Children and Young Persons Acts 1933 and 1963, and local byelaws
  • To identify risk and safeguarding concerns and escalate immediately where appropriate.

 Personal Skills required

  •  Our ideal candidate will be passionate about making a positive difference for Suffolk
  • Demonstrate a practical understanding of the Children and Young Persons Acts 1933 and 1963, Education Act 1996, and Children (Performances and Activities) (England) Regulations 2014
  • Familiarity with issuing child performance licences, work permits, and chaperone approvals
  • Bring understanding of school attendance requirements and the impact of employment/entertainment on education, with a sensitive and inclusive approach to matters relating to disability, sexuality, gender, and ethnicity.
