The Apprentice Laboratory Technician will support the engineering laboratories teams with carrying out routine operational, maintenance, and manufacturing tasks while completing a Level 2 Engineering Operative Apprenticeship in the first year of the three-year apprenticeship programme.

On your 2nd and 3rd year you will be able to complete your Level 3. 

As an Apprentice Laboratory Technician, you will:

  • Assist with the setup, operation, and maintenance of engineering tools, machinery and equipment
  • Comply with statutory regulations and organisation health and safety requirements including any environmental compliance procedures and systems to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Learn to read and interpret technical drawings and work instructions
  • Be trained to operate a variety of engineering machinery and equipment - use hand tools and basic workshop equipment safely and correctly.
  • Carry out routine checks, inspections, and simple fault-finding under supervision.
  • Prepare materials and equipment for engineering processes, providing technical support including communications software.
  • Develop knowledge of industry standards and certification requirements.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs (or equivalent) in English, Maths & Sciences at Level 4/5 (Grade C) or above.

Applicants without English and Maths qualifications may be required to work towards them as part of the apprenticeship.
We welcome applications from students who have not yet completed their GCSEs. Conditional offers will be made on the basis that applicants achieving five GCSEs (or equivalent) including English, Maths, and Sciences at Level 4/5 (Grade C) or above.

Training to be provided

The learner will be studying the Engineering Operative Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard qualification.
Day release to West Suffolk College.

Workshop, laboratory, engineering environment. • Use of PPE as required. • Physical tasks including lifting, standing, and manual handling.

Future prospects

Continuous professional development opportunities including professional status e.g. EngTech and/or IEng. • Career progression through our Technical Support or Specialist Technology Career Pathways. • Further qualifications - Higher Apprenticeship in Engineering e.g. HNC/HND, Foundation degrees, and BEng.
