Jackson is working with the Environment Agency (EA) to trial a new 3D underwater scanning technology.
The technology has been developed by Danish start-up company UVision who work with Jackson supply chain partner CLM. Co-founder of UVision, Morten Beier, recently visited Bedford Lock in Bedford to carry out a full scan of the structure.
The lock requires refurbishment and typically a full investigation is required prior to any work starting. Jackson and the EA want to see how UVision’s technology compares with more traditional scanning and investigative methods, such as draining the lock or using divers.
Morten said: “The 3D underwater scan provides a photo-realistic and measurable 3D model, meaning the inspection can be carried out a lot easier.
"It provides users with an overview - you can zoom in and see the smallest of details or zoom out and get the big picture. It is like draining the water but without actually doing it.”
The equipment consists of a stereo camera – two colour HD cameras – and SLAM (simultaneous location and mapping) software. which scans the image while also building up a map of the structure as a whole.
