About
The New Wolsey Theatre is a regional theatre with a national reputation for the quality, range and reach of its work and for embracing cultural diversity in the widest sense. The theatre is central to the creative life of Suffolk and seeks to expand the horizons of audiences and artists by presenting a programme designed to entertain, enrich and challenge. The watchwords for all work are highest quality, greatest diversity and maximum accessibility.
The New Wolsey produces and presents a year-round programme of work for all ages in both the main theatre (400 seats) and the studio (104 seats), combining its own productions with a wide range of visiting theatre, music, comedy, and other performing arts.
Job Roles within the Theatre
The range of jobs within the theatre industry is varied and vast, from Technicians to Front of House Assistants and Marketing Officers to Creative Communities Practitioners, there are many different positions which need to be filled to keep the theatre running. We employ full-time, part-time and casual staff in most departments, as well as freelance creative teams for our in-house productions.

Volunteering with us as an usher is a great way to get involved in your local theatre and provide the same warm welcome that you’re used to on your visits to us.
As a volunteer usher you’ll be involved in:
- Checking tickets and guiding people to their seats
- Selling programmes and ice-creams
- Providing friendly and helpful customer service
- Helping keep our audiences safe
Shifts generally last between 3-4 hours depending on the show. You must be aged 16 and over to join us and all we ask is that you’re committed to helping out your local theatre. There will be the opportunity to receive free tickets, attend guest nights and other events as a thanks for your support.
