The primary responsibility of a tree surgeon is to take care of trees, hedges, and shrubs by planting, pruning, felling, and maintaining them. They must be capable of identifying issues such as pest infestations, diseases, and other stress factors caused by environmental conditions. To provide the best preservation solution for the tree, a tree surgeon will need to recommend appropriate treatments taking into consideration the sustainability and longevity of the tree where at all possible.

There are various routes to becoming a tree surgeon.  You could get into the role through an arborist apprenticeship or take a college course in arboriculture or forestry and arboriculture which will give you some of the skills and knowledge needed. 

You could study for a foundation degree, high national diploma, or degree in a relevant subject, such as forestry, arboriculture, countryside management, or similar. 

You may also be able to start as a ground worker and work your way up by completing further training.

Salary range £21k (entry-level) - £55k (experienced)
