Job Description

Steeplejacks carry out repairs, maintenance and renovation work to high buildings such as Church steeples, high rise buildings, bridges, industrial chimneys and other types of towers. They are also involved in fitting lightning conductors and aircraft warning lights on tall buildings.

Lightning Conductor Engineers operate in similar conditions and share many similarities with this role.

Entry Requirements

You can apply directly to become a Steeplejack.  Employers may look for some GCSEs especially in maths, English, Science or Desing and Technology.

Experience in general construction work would be an advantage or you could apply for an apprenticeship in roles such as scaffolding, roofing or electrical work to get you started and then specialise to become a Steeplejack

For an apprenticeship you will usually need:

• GCSEs including English and maths or equivalent for an intermediate apprenticeship
• 4 to 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) or equivalent for an advanced apprenticeship

Further information

You need to be physically fit for this role and to be able to cope with working a heights.

You'll need a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card or equivalent to train and work on a construction site.

Salary Range

£15,000 to £35,000
