Renewable energy is from sources that are naturally replenished and cannot run out. There are five main renewable energy sources which are solar power, wind energy, geothermal energy (from heat inside the earth), biomass (from plants) and hydropower (from running water)

A renewable energy engineer is involved in producing and harnessing forms of energy from these natural sources.

Responsibilities will include deciding on the best locations for energy generation (such as where a wind or solar farm should be located), checking site conditions, conducting research into the most cost-effective processes, and remaining up to date with legislative and environmental standards.

To get into the role you will usually need a degree in a relevant subject such as earth sciences, environmental engineering, or renewable or sustainable energy. There are also a number of renewable energy apprenticeship programmes available.

Salary range £25k (starting) to £60k (experienced)
