Quality Assurance (QA) Testers work with software applications, online services or consumer technology devices to ensure that digital services and any hardware elements of a product function to a minimum standard, meeting the aspirations of the designers and expectations of customers.  QA testers work closely with developers and manufacturers to feedback and precisely articulate their experiences and any issues they identify in applications, often working through test ‘scripts’ for various usage scenarios.  Efficient QA testing reduces the probability of product recalls or having to release large software patches early in the product lifecycle, potentially saving time, energy and the associated carbon footprint.

To become a QA Tester you might consider a degree in Computer Science or Software Applications, though university education isn’t necessarily required.  Vendor neutral qualifications (for example CompTIA) related to software, hardware and online services will be useful in demonstrating your technical knowledge and ability to identify issues.

Salary range £25,000-£45,000
