Machine Learning Engineers are programmers working in Artificial Intelligence (AI) who enable software systems to learn or improve their own capabilities autonomously, based on information they consume. One topical application of machine learning is the processing and modelling of climate change datasets, which are already becoming too large for humans to fully analyse without help.  In this role you will work with code and algorithms, allowing computers to improve their services without specific human intervention.  Working on self-driving vehicles or producing virtual assistants helping with mental health advice are just some of the things you could work on.

To become a Machine Learning Engineer you will likely need a degree in subjects like Statistics, Computer Science, Maths or any emerging AI-specific university level qualifications.  You must have extensive programming experience in a relevant language, such as Java, Python or C++, either through your studies or external experience and self-practice.

Salary range: £40,000-£150,000
