Job Description
Local Government Officers work in a range of different departments to develop and implement council policies and procedures, departments could include education/skills, finance, health, housing, planning, social work, tourism, transport or leisure and recreation. They will work with councillors, administrators and other departments to assist in the creation, planning and monitoring of policies and procedures.
Entry Requirements
You can get into this role by taking a degree, applying for a graduate training scheme, through an apprenticeship or applying directly
University
You could take a degree or HND in subjects such as:
- Business Studies
- Economics
- Legal studies
- Politics
- Social administration
- Social policy
or you could take a job specific qualification such as:
- Town planning
- Urban Design
- Historic Building Conservation (for a conservation officer post)
You will usually need:
- 1 or 2 A levels or equivalent for a foundation degree or HND
- 2 to 3 A levels or equivalent for a degree
Once you have your degree, you may be able to join a local authority National Graduate Development Programme. You would need a first class or upper second degree. Most subjects are acceptable.
Apprenticeship
You could look for an advanced apprenticeship in public service operational delivery:
You'll usually need:
- 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths, for an advanced apprenticeship
Direct Application
You could apply for this role directly if you have the correct skills and experience. You will probably need at least 4 GCSEs and A Levels or equivalent depending on the role you are applying for. For certain job you may need a degree or specific qualification in an area such as town planning or public policy.

Salary Range
£18,000 to £40,000
