The Lead Programmer is responsible for providing technical guidance and mentorship to a team of software developers. Duties can vary but usually include meeting clients to discuss product specifications, training new software developers, writing custom code, setting meeting and production goals, and ensuring deadlines are met.  

Sustainability plays a crucial role in software development and lead developers can make smarter choices in their software development processes such as ensuring code is efficient, which will reduce energy consumption and minimise environmental impact.

You will usually need a degree in computer science, software engineering or similar to get into this role.  Employers also often look for at least five years' experience in software development.

You could take a higher apprenticeship in software development and work your way up.

Salary range - £46k to £64k
