The role of an environmental engineer is to focus on protecting the environment by reducing waste and pollution.  Their main concerns will be issues such as climate change, drought, population growth, pollution, deforestation, and energy consumption. 

Responsibilities will include optimising the use of natural resources, helping to develop renewable energy resources, and maximising the use of existing materials as well as designing technologies and processes that control pollution and clean up contamination.

To become an environmental engineer, you will need to complete a degree in a relevant subject such as environmental engineering, civil engineering, geoscience, geology or geotechnical engineering. 

You could also start through an apprenticeship with an environmental company or local authority.

Salary range - £17k (entry level) to £90k (experienced)
