A Data Analyst works with large datasets to recognise patterns and trends and interpret what these mean from a project or business perspective. Collated and interpreted data needs to be presented in clear and often visual ways, so that project managers, CEOs or engineers can then make informed decisions.  Data Analysis can transform and improve almost any process or business that collects large amounts of data as a result of its activities.  For example, data analysis relating to the statistics for types of material turning up in a recycling centre could be used to influence recycling processes or policies.

To become a Data Analyst you need excellent analytical and numerical skills, with the ability to spot trends and anomalies.  Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, Information Management and Business Systems degrees are useful but not essential, if you can demonstrate aptitude and experience of data analysis techniques, query languages (e.g. SQL) and projects.

Salary range: £25,000-£60,000
